Ryan James Wedding, a Canadian citizen currently believed to be residing in Mexico, competed for Canada in the giant slalom snowboarding event at the 2002 Winter Olympics in Salt Lake City. Federal prosecutors say that following his athletic career, Wedding became deeply involved in organized crime, ultimately rising to the top of a sophisticated transnational narcotics operation.
According to court documents, Wedding is accused of overseeing the procurement and transportation of cocaine from South America into the United States and Canada. After a joint investigation involving authorities in both countries, he was charged in June 2024 in the U.S. District Court for the Central District of California. The charges included operating a continuing criminal enterprise, murder, attempted murder, and conspiracy to possess, distribute, and export cocaine.
Prosecutors later expanded the case against Wedding in a superseding indictment unsealed on October 16, 2024. That indictment alleges Wedding conspired with others to transport hundreds of kilograms of cocaine from Southern California into Canada using a Canada-based drug distribution network.
The same indictment accuses Wedding and a co-conspirator of directing the November 20, 2023, killings of two members of a family in Ontario, Canada, in connection with drug trafficking activities. Authorities also allege Wedding ordered the murder of another individual in Canada on May 18, 2024, over an unpaid drug debt.
In a further escalation of the case, prosecutors say Wedding’s most recent indictment includes allegations that he ordered the killing of an associate in Colombia in January 2025.
Wedding remains the subject of ongoing legal proceedings as authorities continue to dismantle what they describe as a far-reaching and highly violent criminal organization
